José M. Hernández
Vintner & Astronaut
NASA engineer José M. Hernández wanted to fly in space ever since he heard that the first Hispanic-American had been chosen to travel into space. “I was hoeing a row of sugar beets in a field near Stockton, Calif., and I heard on my transistor radio that Franklin Chang-Diaz had been selected for the Astronaut Corps,” says Hernandez, who was a senior in high school at the time. That hard work paid off when was selected to begin training as a mission specialist as part of the 2004 astronaut candidate class.
Hernández was selected as part of the 19th class of astronauts in 2004. In 2006, José completed Astronaut Candidate Training and in 2009, he was a mission specialist on the STS-128 mission on board the Space Shuttle, Discovery.
Since leaving NASA, he served as the Executive Director of Strategic Operations at MEI Technologies in Texas. In 2012, he ran for the US House of Representatives in the 10th California Congressional District.
Hernández recently received the 2016 National Hispanic Hero Award presented by the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute. He is now the owner and vintner of Tierra Luna Winery.

Host, Grape Encounters
David Wilson, Host of “Grape Encounters Radio,” will bring his show back to the US for one weekend only to participate in the Palm Springs International Food & Wine Festival. David was the weekday afternoon drive host on the Coachella Valley’s leading News/Talk station twelve years ago. However, for the past two years, David’s food, wine, and travel program has been broadcast from Italy’s Adriatic coast, where David is a lead consultant to a remarkable project known as Vinum Hadrianum.
GRAPE ENCOUNTERS WILL INTRODUCE THE HISTORY-INSPIRED WINES OF ITALY’S VINUM HADRIANUM
Located in the Abruzzo region of Central-Eastern Italy, the history-making Vinum Hadrianum project is literally recreating wines of the Roman Empire, using 2000-year-old tools and techniques. The project is also resurrecting iconic and historically significant properties, including an ancient palace, an 800-year-old monastery, and a long-forgotten Roman marketplace. Each property is being lovingly restored and will invite visitors to savor Vinum Hadrianum’s wines in authentic ancient Roman settings.
At the festival, guests will have the opportunity to be the first Americans to taste these history-inspired wines, which were fermented and aged in giant terracotta amphoras handcrafted from clay extracted from the very same soil their ancient varietals are grown in. You can join David as he interviews celebrity chefs, leading boutique winemakers, and other VIP guests at the festival.
